Announcing MD Undergraduate Program Appointments

Dr. Maggie Watt

Dr. Maggie Watt has been appointed Integrated Community Clerkship (ICC) Program Director effective July 1, 2017 for a 3 year term.  In this role she is responsible for providing strategic, managerial and academic leadership supporting the delivery of multiple integrated clerkships in collaboration with the Vancouver Fraser, Southern, Northern and Island Medical Programs.

Dr. Watt is a Full Service Family Physician in Duncan, B.C., and a Clinical Instructor with the Department of Family Practice in the Cowichan Valley.  She was hired by the Island Medical Program in 2009 to set up the Duncan ICC Program and spearheaded the opening of the Cowichan Maternity Clinic with the Cowichan Division of Family Practice in 2011 where she continues to sit as Physician Lead.  Her commitment to innovation in medical education is evidenced by her involvement in a skills-based approach to teaching professionalism (The Procomp Toolkit) now proposed to be one of the tools used in the new Portfolio in Year 3 of the renewed MD Undergraduate Curriculum.

 

Drs. Karin Blouw and Marjorie Docherty have been appointed Co-Directors, Year 3 Family Practice Clerkship in the MD Undergraduate Program effective September 1, 2017.  In this role they are responsible for providing strategic, managerial and academic leadership supporting the delivery of the Year 3 Rural Family Practice clerkship across the province in collaboration with the Vancouver Fraser, Southern, Northern and Island Medical Programs.

 

Dr. Karin Blouw

Dr. Blouw is a Clinical Assistant Professor with the Department of Family Practice, UBC and Site Director, Northwest Region, Northern Medical Program, UNBC.  In her role as Site Director for the Northwest Region, Dr. Blouw has ensured the smooth functioning of the Year 3 Rural Family Practice Clerkship, collaborated with Year 3 Site Directors (IMP, VFMP, NMP, and SMP) and UBC Family Practice course directors to support curriculum renewal within the rural Family Practice clerkship and to provide support for students with academic difficulties. She is also involved in coordinating the Faculty of Medicine’s Year 4 Office and Northern Medical Program Year 4 Course Directors and administrative leaders to ensure smooth functioning of the Year 4 Elective program.   Since 2006, Dr. Blouw has had a clinical practice in Smithers, B.C. and has extensive experience in the area of geriatric psychiatry as a teacher, consultant, and physician.

 

 

 

Dr. Marjorie Docherty

Dr. Docherty is a Clinical Professor, Department of Family Practice, UBC and The Clerkship Site Leader, Rural Family Practice (RFP) for the UBC Southern Medical Program.   Over the past 20 years, she has worked as a family physician at Kelowna General Hospital (KGH) and has a full service family practice in the community.  Throughout her career, she has held numerous positions with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC including serving as President from 2011-2013. Over the past 20 years, she has held numerous educational leadership positions at KGH including Coordinator for UBC Family Practice Pediatrics/Obstetrics Program (1994-2005), Director of Family Practice Pediatric Residency Program (1994-1998), and Executive for the Department of Family Practice Division of Obstetrics (2000-2015). From 2004-2005, she was one of the lead faculty for the expansion of UBC’s Rural Family Practice Program to Kelowna.
