Global Health

The program will accommodate two R3 positions with up to 6 months of funding per position (including a 2 month field placement) running continuously or discontinuously (according to the resident's preference) over the academic year.  Participants will be encouraged to apply for placement in a resource-limited, international setting with the organization or health authority of their choice, after completion of the training period.  Advice and assistance in this process are available.

The structure of this program is based on the principles of self-directed learning.  As such, the residents are responsible for creating their own specific learning objectives and learning strategy;  the program coordinators will provide guidance in this task.  These objectives need to be in keeping with the objectives and time-line of the program.  The resident is expected to participate in a mid-term and final evaluation, and complete all self and clinical evaluation forms.  The resident will be involved in the evaluation and development of the R3 program.

HIV/AIDS

In order to address the lack of experienced physicians in HIV/AIDS, the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV and AIDS is pleased to be able to offer a 12 month postgraduate training program or a shorter 3 month program of preceptorship training, both at an R3 level.  The primary objective of this comprehensive program is to enhance the provision of HIV care to patients in BC, especially for primary care physicians working in limiting settings.  The resident will be trained at a wide variety of clinical sites, encompassing inpatient and ambulatory training where they will participate in the primary care of the HIV patient and be exposed to a multidisciplinary approach in the management of HIV/AIDS.  This program has been developed as a partnership between the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS and the UBC Enhanced Skills Program.

Hospital Medicine

The clinical training site is at Surrey Memorial Hospital serving a community of over 600,000 people.  At this point, SMH is the second largest hospital in BC with the busiest ER in the province.  This hospitalist program is available to candidates who have completed their residency in Family Medicine and have their CCFP or are qualified for the CCFP.  They must be licensed to work in the province of BC.  It is open to new graduates of the residency program in family medicine, or to those who have been in practice for a period of time and who have identified a need in their community for added hospital practice skills.

Residents involved in 3 to 6 months of training will be expected to develop a set of objectives for training which will be reviewed, and accepted by the faculty, and upon which evaluations will be basedIt is expected that at the end of the year, residents will have developed a skill set that will allow them to work in a community based or academic hospitalist program, or to work with greater skill and confidence in a rural hospital setting.   For shorter term residents it is expected that they will be able to function in a hospital setting with greater confidence and skill.
