For Family Physicians & Specialists The Department of Family Practice at the University of British Columbia is very pleased to make available a number of residency positions for family physicians or specialists in the province of British Columbia for the purpose of developing specific advanced skills for which there is an identified community need. These positions represent a commitment on the part of the Department of Family Practice, and the Medical School, to respond to community need in an effective way. They are not a back door to a Royal College Residency.

Please note that there has been a great deal of interest in added/enhanced skills training lately, from both physicians in practice and from graduating residents. Our training positions are filling quickly, and in fact by September 2010 all positions had been allocated for the 2010 – 2011 academic year.
If as an R2 you are considering added training at some point following the completion of your R2 year, it would be wise to discuss opportunities with Dr. Newbery as soon as possible - Applications must be submitted by March 15, 2011 for training in 2011-2012.
If as an R1 you are wondering what skills you might add to a comprehensive community practice on the completion of your residency training, consider discussing R3 opportunities with Dr. Newbery.
We continue to strongly support applications from physicians in practice who have identified added skills needs in their communities.
Who should take the Program?
Applications will be considered and approved in the following priority order according to training time and training spots available:
Selection Process
Candidates will be selected based upon their personal merits, commitment to their community, and ability to meet community needs. Letters of support from members of the community (regional health board, hospital CEO, etc.) and local physicians, confirming the need and affirming support for the candidate in pursuit of these skills will usually be required.
Program Benefits
At the end of the training period, a UBC Certificate of Completion will be presented to a resident completing 6 month to one year residencies. A Letter of Completion outlining the training taken will be presented to residents completing a shorter residency. No certification will follow the completion of the Enhanced Skills Program, with the possible exception of Emergency Medicine, which may lead to the CCFP (EM) examination.
Objectives
An outline of the general educational objectives are available for most programs. However, specific learning objectives will need to be developed between the candidate, their preceptor, and the Department of Family Practice. Certain areas of training such as CCFP(EM), FP Anaesthesia, Oncology and Health Care of the Elderly, have set curriculae.
Salary
Successful candidates will be paid at an R3 resident level, which is currently $59,038 per annum plus benefits. If training for less than one year, this amount will be pro-rated accordingly.
