Curriculum Objectives

The objectives are categorized under the Principles of Family Medicine and are in turn linked to the CanMEDS-FM Roles . These objectives, written primarily for Family Practice residents and their preceptors (in Family Medicine and other disciplines), outline the concepts and skills important to becoming a well-rounded family physician. They are organized around the Four Principles of Family Medicine and are complemented by the College of Family Physicians of Canada’s New Evaluation Objectives and Key Features documents. We recognize that those preparing for the CCFP examiniation may prefer to focus on materials outlined in the CFPC Priority Topics & Key Features document rather than these objectives.

It is unlikely residents will be able to gain experience with all of the objectives on core rotations. Further learning takes place during related rotations, Family Medicine experiences, seminars, and independent study. In addition, residents may also use these objectives to determine which electives will be most beneficial in attaining more experience in areas not covered during core rotations.

Family medicine residents are expected to develop and practice a set of behaviors for lifelong self-assessment and professional enrichment. This will take the form of developing professional competence and expertise through the acquisition, assessment, and application of knowledge and skills relevant to their practice and community populations.

Please note: The Objectives are in the midst of revision and newer versions will be posted as they are ready.
