The UBC Department of Family Practice offers a two-year Family Practice Residency Training Program which is fully accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada. Training occurs at 13 principle sites. These sites are distributed widely from locations in Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley to the Northern Interior regions of the province of British Columbia.
The curriculum at all sites conforms to the requirements of the College of Family Physicians of Canada with training in Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics, Geriatrics, Pediatrics and Psychiatry. Elective time allows flexibility for residents to tailor their training to their educational needs and career goals. There is a mandatory academic curriculum, for all residents on in-town rotations. Each year, residents attend a Resident Reatreat and a Resident Research Day. Residents are required to complete a clinical practice audit in their PGY1 year, and a research project in their PGY2 year. Practice examinations are held annually to prepare residents for the College of Family Physicians Certification Examinations. Residents at all sites are required to spend a minimum of eight weeks in a rural family practice setting during their second year. Reimbursement for travel and accommodation are covered by program policies.
