Application Process

Application to Family Practice Training Program (for Canadian Graduates only)

Selection Process | Documentation | Interview Registration & Open House | Ranking Process | Additional Information | Second Iteration Application Process

The Selection Process

UBC Family Practice Residency Program only accepts applications through the Canadian Residents Matching Service (CaRMS) .

Foreign graduates from an international medical school may only apply to our IMG site during the first iteration, or any unfilled positions available in the second iteration. Please refer to CaRMS website for detail information.

The selection system in the UBC Family Practice Program is primarily applicant driven. We believe this is more realistic, and it allows applicants to make an informed decision based on what they learnt about us. We want residents to choose us for what we have to offer and what we are trying to do.

One Program - Sixteen Sites

The selection of residents at our Family Medicine Residency program is a central process. All applications are administered centrally and will be scored based on common criteria and standards. Your file may be reviewed by faculty from any site regardless of which site you apply to. There is no mini match for UBC. You need to apply to each UBC residency site that you are interested; however, you file will only be reviewed once, no matter how many sites you apply to. Therefore make sure you assign the same set of documents to each application. All application materials must be sent to the CaRMS office. Documents sent to our program office will not be considered.

Letters of Recommendation

We would like you to submit three letters of recommendation . At least one of them should be from a family physician who knows you well and can give us some detail about your personal qualities and motivation. Please ask that the letter be as complete as possible; describing your personal characteristics and the qualities that will make you a good Family Doctor.

The remaining two letters can be from anyone of your choice; describing at least your personal traits, commitment to patient care/people, integrity, communication skills, and general characteristics that will make you a good family physician.

Please submit the reference letters and personal biographical summary directly to CaRMS. We will not be able to process any documents that are sent directly to our office.

Biographical Summary

You will need to submit a personal letter demonstrating that you understand what it means to be a family Physician; what your current career goals are, and your reasons for choosing family medicine as a career. You may want to explain why you prefer certain sites for your training.  Some sites, such as the Rural site and the Aboriginal site, may look for specific characateristics in candidates.

Elective

An elective during fourth year medicine in Family Medicine either in BC or elsewhere, completed before the match, is not required for application to UBC Family Medicine.  Candidates who have not been able to arrange Family Medicine electives prior to the CaRMS match will not be adversly affected in our ranking process.

Interview and Open House

Applicants will be contacted by the program via email by January 6, 2012. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview.

Please refer to Interview and Open House section for details.

Ranking Process

Equal weighting will be given to the file score and interview score. You will receive a file score based solely on your application material. Your interview score will be added to your file score to calculate your final rank score.

Global Score = File Score (50%) + Interview Score (50%)

Regardless of the number of sites you apply to, your final score will go into a global rank list. Each site to which you apply will then develop its own rank list based on your final score and your relative position on the global rank list.
