Welcome

The Collaborating Centre for Prison Health and Education was established in 2006 and is a growing assembly of voices acting together to enhance social well-being and (re)integration of individuals in custody, their families and communities. Our four goals include health and education, research and communications, service and engagement, and advocacy and policy. We invite you to read more about our mission and vision, and our activities.

    October 6-7 2011: WHO Hosting International Conference "Health in Prison and Throughcare: Provision and Continuity of Care for those in the Criminal Justice System" in Albano Terme, Italy

    CIHR Funded "Doing Time" Project to Present at WHO Conference in Terme, Italy. The Conference aims to explore the key issues in  all organizations where people are detained – police arrest, police arrest houses, prisons (sentenced and pre-sentenced) and detention centres for migrants. The conference will also be of interest to community organizations that provide services for prisoners while in detention and when they are released; policy makers, criminal justice professionals, researchers, academics, practitioners and representatives from the media.

    CCPHE Invited As Official Observer to WHO Network Meeting on Prison Health

    October 4-5 2011, Albano Terme, Italy.  CCPHE is invited as to attend as an official observer. The aims of the meeting are to share information between WHO Regional Office for Europe and its Member States on prison health issues and best practices in the Region and in particular to discuss: Stewardship of Prison Health; Sharing Member States’ issues and experiences; Global developments; Staff training; Violence

    Unlocking Recovery in Prisons: Royal Society of Medicine Hosts Conference in London October 13th, 2011

    OVERVIEW: In April 2011 the funding for drug treatment in prisons passed from the MOJ to the DOH and with it the responsibility to commission these services passed to local partnerships. Many of those with the commissioning responsibility are new to the prison setting and are stepping into unfamiliar territory. Some topics that will be covered include: What works in prison? How does the prison system itself work? What opportunities are there to deliver recovery focused treatment? What are the challenges to working within a prison environment?

    July 2011: Final Copy of the Discussion Paper "Towards Reducing Health Inequities: a Health System Approach to Chronic Disease Prevention"

    The Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) initiated the Reducing Health Inequities: A Health System Approach to Chronic Disease Prevention project to identify the actions the health system can take towards reducing health inequities. Three underserved populations were identified for the focus of this work: immigrants, refugees, and individuals transitioning into and out of the corrections system. An engagement process was undertaken with a wide range of key stakeholders from across BC representing health authorities, government, and community organizations to collectively put forward recommendations for action to reduce health inequities and improve the quality and accessibility of the health system's policies, programs and services.

    The 2011 CPHA conference is being held in Montreal, Quebec June 19-22. The Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA) is a national, not-for-profit, voluntary association representing an independent voice for public health in Canada. This conference will gather public health professionals, researchers, policy makers, academics and students from across the country and around the world.

    The 2011 FMF conference will be held November 3-5 in Montreal. This conference in the past has accepted numerous abstracts on issues and teaching in prison medicine from members of the CCPHE and will likely do the same this year. We encourage all prison physicians, clinical staff, and academics to consider attending this CME accredited event!

    NAPCRG Annual Meeting

    The North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG) is a multidisciplinary organization for primary care researchers. NAPCRG hosts an annual meeting through which over 500 sessions are presented representing all areas of primary care research, including prison medicine.

    NAPCRG 2011 is going to take place in Banff, Alberta November 12-16 . You are invited to submit a proposal for paper presentation, poster, workshop, or forum. Submissions for this year are due April 18th
