Saraswathi Vedam honoured by ACNM, Midwives Alliance of North America
October 27, 2010
- Saraswathi Vedam, Director of the Midwifery Program, was appointed a Fellow at Large by the American College of Nurse-Midwives
(ACNM) in 2010. This fellowship is granted to midwives and
nurse-midwives who: demonstrate leadership; provide a unique, innovative
and/or pioneering contribution to clinical practice, education and/or
care of women, infants, families and communities; encourage the
professional growth of midwifery through teaching, mentoring and/or
research; and, contribute significantly to perinatal and/or women’s
health care or to health care policy.
The ACNM promotes the health and well-being of women and infants within their
families and communities through the development and support of the
profession of midwifery as practiced by certified nurse-midwives, and
certified midwives.
Ms. Vedam was also recently recognized for Distinguished Service to the Midwives Alliance of North America (MANA). Ms. Vedam currently serves as Senior Advisor to MANA's Division of Research.
MANA
is a professional organization for all midwives, recognizing the
diversity of educational backgrounds and practice styles within the
profession. It aims to unify and strengthen the profession of midwifery,
thereby improving the quality of health care for women, babies, and
communities.

Dr. Ronald A. Wilson named 2010 Canada's Family Physician of the Year
October 18, 2010
- Dr. Ronald A. Wilson,
Clinical Associate Professor, was named one of Canada's Top Family
Physicians for 2010 by the College of Family Physicians of Canada
(CFPC). The honour (also known as the Reg L. Perkin Award) recognizes
exceptional family physicians who demonstrate exceptional care for
patients, meaningful contributions to the health and well‐being of
communities, and dedication to research and teaching.
This highly prestigious accolade recognizes Dr. Wilson's leadership in the practice of family medicine – specifically
obstetrics and geriatrics – in British Columbia. His dedication to
treating pregnant women with substance use issues through programs like
PRIMA and organizations such as Sheway and BC Women’s hospital are a
testament to his skill, care and compassion.
Dr. Wilson's volunteer efforts to
promote physical activity through various channels (CFPC and BCMA
committee work, participation in a physician engagement outreach program
with Walk BC) demonstrate his commitment to empowering patients to
take action to improve their health outcomes. Also, his contribution
to the clinical teaching of medical students and residents has
supported the development and growth of future generations of family
doctors for the province of British Columbia.

Dr. Marjorie Doherty winner of 2010 Peter Grantham Award for Teaching Excellence
July
12, 2010 - Dr. Peter Grantham presented Dr. Marjorie Doherty,
faculty for the Kelowna postgraduate site, with the 2010 Peter Grantham
Award for Teaching Excellence during Family Practice Research Day.
Dr.
Doherty was recognized for her dedication and ongoing contributions to
the education and training of residents for a career in rural family
practice.
The Teaching Excellence Award is given to a physician who encourages
others in their efforts to teach family medicine and whose individual
teaching style is clear, relevant, concise, conceptually sound,
positive, and humorous. Recipients are nominated by their colleagues and
selected by the Peter Grantham Award committee.

Patti Janssen honoured with President's Award, Killam Teaching Prize
May
14, 2010 - Associate Member, Patti Janssen, Director, Masters of Population Health Program, School of Population Health, recently received UBC's prestigeous President's Award for Public Education Through Media
prize. The annual award recognizes one faculty member who has
demonstrated outstanding service to the University and the community
by actively and creatively sharing research expertise via the news
media.
Janssen was also awarded a UBC Killam Teaching Prize, an honour conferred upon faculty who demonstrate teaching
excellence in medical and science
undergraduate programs, residency programs, school and graduate programs
within the Faculty of Medicine.

May
5, 2010 - Martha Donnelly, Director, Division of Community
Geriatrics, was recently awarded the UBC Killam Teaching Prize.
The Killam Prize recognizes teaching excellence in medical and science
undergraduate programs, residency programs, school and graduate programs
within the Faculty of Medicine.
Lachlan Macintosh, Clinical Assistant Professor, was honoured
with the Clinical
Faculty Award for Excellence in Community Practice Teaching. This
prize recognizes Dr. Macintosh for his sustained educational impact in a
local community as well as his excellence in teaching.
Martha Donnelly elected Primus Inter Pares by Vancouver Medical
Association
May
5, 2010 - Martha Donnelly, Director, Division of Community
Geriatrics, was elected as Primus Inter Pares ("first among equals") in
March, 2010 by the Vancouver Medical Association. The honour recognizes
the loyalty of a practitioner to the Vancouver Medical Association and
acknowledges her good service to both the city of Vancouver and her
fellows in the organization.

Videsh Kapoor wins Global Health Education Consortium award
April
26, 2010 - Videsh Kapoor, a Clinical Assistant Professor in
Family Practice, won the Velji Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence in
Global Health at the Global Health Education Consortium conference in
Mexico.

March 29, 2010 - The Trial Lawyers Association of British Columbia (TLABC) conferred the 2010 President's Award to Dr. Gurdeep Parhar,
Associate Dean of Equity and Professionalism for the Faculty of
Medicine and Clinical Assistant Professor for the Department of Family
Practice.
Dr. Parhar has presented at numerous medical/legal
education seminars and was a popular event co-chair of TLABC’s annual
medical/legal conference. He will receive his award on April 9, 2010
during a luncheon session at the TLABC's upcoming "The Intersection of Law and Medicine" conference.

2010 John J. Zack Award
June 25, 2010 - The 2010 John J. Zack award was presented at the 2010 Family Practice Research Day to Greater Vancouver resident, Dr. Jeff Plante. Victoria resident, Steve Kulla, was the runner-up for this prize.
The
John J. Zack Award is presented to an R@ who plans to practice
full-service family medicine, including obstetrics, upon completion of
his/her residency. Successful candidates must also demonstrate
leadership skills and be interested in the CFPC.
2010 Dr. Morten Dodek Award in Family Practice
June 25, 2010 - The
inaugural Dr. Morten Dodek Award in Family Practice was awarded at 2010
Family Practice Research Day to Nanaimo resident, Dr. Joel Kennedy. Residents Dr. John Omura and Jasmine Leslie were runners-up for this prize.
The
Dr. Morten Dodek Award is given to a resident who demonstrates care,
competence and compassion. This award was created to honour Dr. Morton
Dodek, a graduate of UBC's first medical class in 1954. Dr. Dodek spent
many years as a full-service family physician and exemplified commitment
to family medicine.
2010 Arthur Edamura Prize in Family Practice
June 25, 2010 - The
inaugural Arthur Edamura Prize in Family Practice was awarded to Dr. Christy Sutherland,
a resident at the St. Paul's Hospital site. This prize is given to a
resident who shows exceptional consideration of and disposition towards
diligent investigation, diagnosis and treatment of a chronic ailment,
disease or condition which eludes diagnosis and/or occurs rarely.
This
prize was established by a patient of Dr. Edamura in recognition of the
doctor's successful investigation and treatment of a chronic condition.

2010 College of Family Physicians of Canada Leadership Award
June 25, 2010 - Resident Dr. Jennifer Parker was recognized with the Leadership Award by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).
The
Leadership Award is given to outstanding senior family medicine
residents within the Department. Recipients are invited to attend the
Family Medicine Forum (FMF)
2010 - being held this year in Vancouver, BC. At the forum, award
winners will participate in special events including a Medical Student
& Family Medicine Resident Leadership Workshop and a special session
with
Canada’s Family Physicians of the Year.
