The Clinician Scholar Program (CSP) offers two year, part-time positions in family medicine research. These third-year residency positions are part of the Postgraduate Program of the UBC Faculty of Medicine. The CSP is an accredited program with the College of Family Physicians of Canada. Each cohort begins the program on July 1st of the calendar year.
Clinician Scholars are encouraged to support the Department of Family Practice's mission of social accountability by enhancing the research capacity of marginalized, rural, and/or remote populations and communities. Family physicians working with these communities are strongly encouraged to apply.
Objectives
- support the development and enhancement of core research skills
- cultivate scholarship within family medicine
- contribute to the knowledge-base of family practice and primary health care
- engage practicing family physicians in conducting research
- foster innovative, interdisciplinary, community-based research
Timeframe and Funding
Applicants are encouraged to plan a two-year timeframe for completion of the program. Approximately $60,000 per successful candidate is available over two years.
Evaluation and Deliverables
Clinical Scholars will be expected to:
- participate in scheduled research gatherings, in-person or by teleconference, approximately once a month. Clinician Scholars will present their work-in-progress for peer-mentoring;
- present work-in-progress at various research rounds and conferences;
- submit regular written progress reports and a bi-annual Supervisor Evaluation Form;
- research mentor submits a bi-annual Clinician Scholar Evaluation Form;
- participate in and present works-in-progress at the annual Department of Family Practice Faculty Research Day held during the third week of June;
- network and collaborate with other Clinician Scholars; and,
- complete a CIHR Common CV by the end of the program.
Program Structure
- Overall supervision of the program is the responsibility of Dr. Michael Klein;
- The CSP Committee oversees the program and is chaired by the CSP Director;
- The CSP is supported by the Research Coordinator of the Department of Family Practice;
- Prior to applying for the program, Clinician Scholars will arrange for one department researcher to act as a research mentor. The CSP Mentorship Agreement will guide the level and type of support the Cliniician Scholar receives during the program.
- Clinician Scholars will be closely connected to a BC university site (not necessarily the UBC Point Grey campus).
